INSTITUTE FOR CRITICAL TECHNICAL & APPLIED SCIENCE

The Institute for Critical Technology & Applied Science (‘ICTAS’) was conceived to create a seamless path between the collaboration of engineers, scientists and lay persons in the pursuit of future advances in technologies. Because the soil conditions on campus were not conducive to the laboratory instruments’ extreme vibration requirements, the facility was moved to the VTCRC. The laboratory contains an electron microscope, nuclear magnetic resonance equipment and other specialty testing equipment.

INTEGRATED LIFE SCIENCE BUILDING

This building provides an unique opportunity for the collaboration between departments from the Colleges of Agriculture, Life Science and Biology. The building includes 21 fume hoods, laboratory spaces and a 7,000 sf. vivarium.

KNOWLEDGE WORKS I & II

The Knowledgeworks project was designed to assist entrepreneurs in new business development. It contains 50% flexible office suites and 50% flexible laboratory modules that can be combined and contracted as a firm’s business model requires.

The glass enclosed connecting bridge contains conference facilities to serve the entire project. Both phases are heated and cooled with a geothermal/geo-exchange well system.

RESEARCH BUILDING III GARVIN INNOVATION CENTER

This was the first research & development building managed by EDC in the Corporate Research Center. The design concept for this building, and all future buildings, was to create multi-tenanted spaces with the greatest flexibility in space layout and building systems to allow inexpensive future modifications and adaptability.

RESEARCH BUILDING VII

Research Building VII was constructed as the home of several IT and scientific companies, including PPI-Transpharm, the Scottish company that cloned “Dolly” the sheep and “Mr. Jefferson” the calf.



It also served as the home of the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute prior to VTTI’s construction of a new and larger facility.

EDC managed the construction of the 50,000 sf. corporate office building, including a conference center, fitness center and cafe. Home to the development office of VTCRC.

RESEARCH BUILDING XV BIOINFORMATICS INSTITUTE

EDC was retained to oversee construction of Research Building XV, home of the Virginia Tech BioInfomatics Institute. For this fast-track project, an experienced team of architects, laboratory designers and contractors were assembled to complete the facility from design to occupancy in 14 months, three months ahead of schedule.
